In New York State, you have a choice as to whom you wish to have your polygraph examinations conducted by because New York State does not presently have any license or certification requirements for a polygraph examiner. Therefore, anyone even someone who never went to an APA approved polygraph school or has any official training in polygraph can perform the examination. This may not be the examiner for you.

You should always verify anyone who proclaims himself or herself as being the best rated or court expert .If someone tells you they will beat any price and can do a test on the phone or in 30 minutes, this may not be the examiner for you. Be very careful about self- proclaim website ad’s that have the “examiner” the winner of many awards. You should always verify.  You may find that it is nothing more than smoke & mirrors. These companies hope you never call the court clerk or verify their membership with the American Polygraph Association     (1-800-272-8037). Always call the organization (s) that you are given by any company and see if it actually has a polygraph program. Some polygraph companies may even have a logo (s) on their website, which leads to nowhere but gives the appearance of being with a legitimate polygraph organization. Every legitimate organization should have a board of directors. Always ensure that the examiner who is actually performing the polygraph examination is a member of the American Polygraph Association. Do you really want something so important done by someone with no actual polygraph school training or real investigative experience? It cost you nothing to call or send an email but may cost you a whole lot more if you do not.

ALL members of the American Polygraph Association have an I.D. card that you should always ask to see before you do the examination and verify that the name is the same as the person doing the examination. Being an APA examiner insures that the examiner has met certain educational requirements and has a working knowledge of polygraph techniques. A “test” that is done over the phone or with any type of tape recorder is not a polygraph examination. A real polygraph examination also can take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, sometimes longer.
